MEMORY VERSE: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our Spirit, that we are the children of God. Romans 8:16.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 8:1-17
INTRODUCTION: In many churches today, some think that they are Christians, some hope so, some say so and only a few know that they are saved. But a person is either saved or lost. You are either “In Christ” or outside Christ. There is no half way. Just as there is no half way in marriage: you are either married or not. To be sure you are saved is to be absolutely confident that if you die suddenly, you would immediately go to heaven. Do you have this assurance? Are you sure?

Those who have done the following things can know for sure that they are saved. Those who (a) have repented and forsaken their sins (Isa. 55:7), (b) and have confessed their sins (Prov. 28:13), (c) and have believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Jn. 3:16,36), (d) have called on Him for mercy (Lk. 18:13) and (e) have received Him as their personal Saviour and Lord (Jn. 1:12).
Anyone who had sincerely done these things could have an assurance of salvation. But note that the repentance must be genuine if it is to lead to true salvation.

Our assurance of salvation cannot be based on feelings. Some people feel a great joy at the moment of Salvation, others do not feel anything. The major reason why our assurance cannot be based on feelings is because Satan might influence or control feelings. To side track Satan, God has given us three things upon which to base our assurance.

(a) The Word of God: Whatever is written is written in the Word of God cannot be false and it is settled forever. Now it is written, (1 John 5:13), that if you believe Jesus Christ then you know that you have eternal life. There are several other passages in the Bible that support our assurance. For example (John 5:240 and (Romans 10:13).

(b) The witness of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:16). Before salvation, the work of the Holy Spirit is to convict a sinner of his sin and make real to him the danger of the judgment to come. Immediately He brings the sinner to the point of salvation, He starts? New ministry in the believer, speaking peace to the believer’s soul, thus creating in him the inner rest that confirms to the individual that he really belongs to Jesus now.

(c) The changed life. (11Cor. 5:17). A person who is truly saved is a new creature in Christ. Everyone around sees the change in his life. He has new desires, new likes, new dislikes, new loves and new hatreds. Evil habits disappear and deep love for other believers and things of God continue to manifest itself.

A man will start to doubt his salvation (a) if he fails to trust the Word of God. To doubt the Word of God is a terrible sin in itself since to doubt the Word of God amounts to doubting God Himself. (b) if he sins and backslides. If a man sins after salvation, he must immediately confess such sins to God and beg for forgiveness. (1 John 1:9). To delay is dangerous since it will lead to backsliding and to hell. However we must remember that if any backslider decides to return home, God is always willing to accept them back. But to die a backslider is to spend eternity in hell. (c) If he remains worldly.

The love of the world chokes our desires for God, the Word and prayer. Jesus illustrated this in the parable of the sower. (d) If he lacks the fullness of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39). This is why a believer should strive to be baptized in the Holy Spirit as soon as possible after salvation. You cannot serve two masters if you are going to serve God, then go the whole length
with Him. Be saved, sanctified and baptized in the Holy Spirit. And why not now?

1. What is Salvation?
2. If you are sure of your salvation what does that mean?
3. On what can base your assurance of Salvation?
4. What are the causes of doubts and how to cure them?
