BATISM OF HOLY SPIRIT

MEMORY VERSE: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.
Joel 2:28.

BIBLE PASSAGE: ACTS 2:1-18
INTRODUCTION: The baptism into the Holy Spirit involves both the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ the Baptizer. Therefore, the baptism is preceded by total surrender and absolute commitment to Jesus. Without this He cannot baptize you in the Holy Spirit. In the case of water baptism, the candidate undergoes total immersion into the river. The candidate does not receive the river, it is the river receiving and overflowing the candidate. When the candidate enters the river, he does not swim about or dive, he walks calmly, resolutely (no going back, I will be baptized today) and keeps going until he stands close to the baptizer. At that point he hands over himself completely to the pastor who will then baptize him. In the case of the HolySpirit baptism, Jesus is the Baptizer, the Holy Spirit is the River, you are the candidate.

WHO CAN BE BAPTIZED?
Anyone who has been born again and sanctified can be baptized into the Holy Spirit. God does not discriminate. He is no respecter of persons. Acts 2:17-18.

WHY DO I NEED TO BE BAPTIZED?
There are several reasons why you need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Here are some of them. Holy Spirit baptism gives you (a) power over sin (Gal. 5:16), (b) power for service (Acts 1:8), (c) power to rebuke evil spirits (Acts 19:13-16), (d) power to rebuke sin (Acts 13:8-11). Also it is the Holy Spirit that bears witness to your spiritual adoption (Rom. 8:16) and leads to dramatic changes in your life. For example, Saul of Tarsus was a great persecutor of Christians (Acts 9:1-2), but after he met the Lord Jesus Christ and he was baptized in the Holy Spirit, he became an entirely new person. (Acts 21:8, 11-13). Above all, it is God’s commandment that you must be baptized in the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18). And if God says so, then any true Christian must do what God says.

WHY MUST I SPEAK IN TONGUES?
Why must I speak in tongues when baptized in the Holy Spirit? Can I be baptized without speaking in tongues? The answer is simple. Speaking in tongues is the immediate evidence that you have been baptized. And the reason is that if you surrender your car to a driver, the first thing he does is to take the steering wheel. Surrender your ship to God and the first thing He does is to take the helm to set your life on a new course (James 3:2, 4-5).

WHO SPEAKS?
When I speak in a new tongue, who speaks, the Spirit or I? The answer is both! You speak as He gives utterance. You talk to God and He understands because you talk to Him with words that He gives upon your lips (Mk. 13:11).

WHAT STEPS DO I HAVE TO TAKE?
To obtain the baptism, there are six steps to take: (a) Confess all your sins to Jesus (1 Jn. 1:9). (b) Renounce these sins (Ps. 66:18). (c) Surrender your life to Him (Rom. 6:13). This is very important. His will must not be at variance with yours. His will must be your will (PS. 40:8). The Holy Spirit is power. And power can be dangerous in the hands of an undisciplined or unsurrendered person. (d) Obey. You must be prepared to obey every command of Jesus Christ henceforth (Acts 5:32). (e) Believe. (James 1:6-7). The Holy Spirit is more anxious to fill you than you are to receive Him. What are you to believe? His promise, of course. Joel (2:28-29). Finally (f) Ask. It is who asks who receives (LK. 11:13).

Are you willing, are you determined? Remember the prodigal son: he said “I will arise and go!” He arose and went. No looking back. If you too are totally determined, then today is your day! Ask and receive the gift of God today.
