THE BIBLE

MEMORY VERSE: Thy word is a lamb unto my feet and a light unto my path. Ps. 119:105

BIBLE PASSAGE: 11 Timothy 3:1-17

INTRODUCATION: Next to the gift of Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Bible is the third greatest gift from God. There are many books but only one book is referred to as the Book, and that is the Bible. It is the oldest book in existence. It required sixteen hundred years to write it and the first writer died 1450 years before the last writer was born. It has been translated into more than 1000 languages and dialects. One important point is that the Bible will be the standard of judgement on the last day (Jn. 12:48).

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE BIBLE?

The seven wonders of the Bible are:
i. The wonder of its formation: One book written in one place in one language, another book written in another country centuries later in another language and yet they blend together.
ii. The wonder of its unification: It is a library of 66 books, yet only one book, for it has only one Author, the Holy Spirit.
iii. The wonder of its age: It is the most ancient of all books.
iv. The wonder of its Sale: It is the best seller of all time.
v. The wonder of the interest people have in it: it is the only book that is read by all classes and ages of mankind. It is read by sages and children alike.
vi. The wonder of its language: It was written largely by uneducated men, yet it is considered a literary masterpiece.
vii.The wonder of its preservation: It has been the most hated of all books.
Time and again, kings and governments have sought to burn and abolish it. Yet God has preserved it for us today and it can be found in almost every home.

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN SYMBOLS USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE WORD OF GOD?

The word of God has been referred to as:
i. A sword: The Bible is a pointed Word that convicts the hearer (Heb. 4:12).
ii. A hammer: The Bible is powerful and breaks the resistance of the hearer (Jere. 23:29).
iii. A Seed: The Bible is a living Word regenerating the hearer (1 Pet. 1:23).
iv. A Mirror: The Bible is a faithful Word, revealing the individual to himself (Jam. 1:23-25).
v. A fire: The Bible is a burning Word, consuming the dross in the hearer (Jere. 23:29).
vi. A lamp: The Bible is an illuminating Word guiding the believer day –by-day (Ps.119:105)
vii. Food: The Bible is nourishing Food, feeding the soul (1 Pet. 2:2).
So that the Word of God convicts, breaks, regenerates, reveals, consumes, illuminates and nourishes the individual.

WHAT IS THE SEVEN REASONS FOR PREACHING THE WORD OF GOD?
i. Conviction of sin comes through the preaching of the Word of God (Acts 2:37).
ii. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom. 10:17).
iii. Cleansing comes from the Word of God (1 Cor. 7:1)
iv. Assurance comes from the Word of God (1 Jn.5:13)
v. Comfort comes from the Word of God (1 Thess. 4:18)
vi. Truth comes from the Word of God (Acts 17:11)
vii. The new birth comes from the Word of God (1 Pet. 1:23).

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN POINTS TO REMEMBER IN READING THE BIBLE?
i. Read it lovingly. The Bible is the Word of my Saviour to me (Ps. 119:11).
ii. Read it reverently. The Bible is the Word of God, the Almighty Saviour and judge.
iii. Read it prayerfully. The Bible is God’s message to me, to my own heart and life. It is the way God speaks to me when I speak to Him (in prayer).
iv. Read it meditatively. The Bible is not a newspaper, novel or a history book. It contains the mysteries of God.
v. Read it systematically. Read right through the Bible, not just selected portions.
vi. Read it resolutely. I will obey that which my Father teaches and commands me from His Book.

CONCLUSION:
He sends His Word and He heals (Ps. 107:20). There is healing in the Word, there is deliverance in the Word, there is salvation in the Word, and there is life in the Word. Make the Bible your constant guide and companion in life! (Jere. 15:16).
