THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

MEMORY VERSE: Every good and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights. James 1:17.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 12:1-21

INTRODUCATION: There is a lot of difference between natural talents and the gifts of Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are special gifts given by the Spirit to believers to enable them to consistently bear fruit to the glory of God and our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many of these gifts and they are all available today as in the time of the Apostles.

HOW MANY KINDS OF GIFTS THERE?
There are various kinds of gifts of the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:8-10) lists some of them as the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation of tongues. This list consists of nine gifts. But other Bible passages list some more. (1 Cor. 12:28). Lists some as the gifts that fit one to be an apostle, prophet, teacher, miracle-worker, healer, administrator or linguist (a linguist is one who understands many languages). (Eph.4:11-16) adds the following: gift of evangelism, pastoral and gift of ministry. (Rom. 12:6-8) adds the gifts of exhortation, gift of giving, gift of ruling, and the gift of showing mercy. Even though there are 24 gifts listed here, some of them are repetitions and there are about 20 different ones namely: gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation of tongues, apostleship, teaching, helping, administration, evangelization, pastor ship, ministry, exhortation, giving, ruling and mercy.

WHO GIVES THE GIFTS?
Who gives these gifts? The answer is found in (1 Cor. 12:11). It is the Holy Spirit who gives these gifts. The Holy Spirit places the convert in the body of Christ and gives him the gift suitable for that particular location in the Body (Eph. 2:21-22). It is God who chooses where in the Body of Christ you are to be located and this determines your initial gifts.

WHY ARE THE GIFTS GIVEN?
The gifts are given so that everyone may profit thereby (1 Cor. 12:7). It is given so that the individual believer may be more useful and profitable to the entire Body of Christ. The Body of Christ has no room for useless believers just as the human body does not have unnecessary parts. Our conversion and baptism into the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13) was more than just escaping hell; it was so that we could be a help and blessing to the Body as a whole.

SHOULD WE DESIRE THE GIFTS?
Should we desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit? The answer is given in 1 Cor. 12:31. We are not just to desire them, we are to covert them. This is the only covetousness that has Divine blessing. Do not be satisfied with just one or two gifts. Seek and pray for others that would help you in the particular position He has given you in the Body. In the parable of the talents, the man who was originally given five more and the unused one was given to him as extra. He ended up with eleven talents. Initially, you may have only one or two gifts. Try and identify them and then keep on seeking for more to use for His glory.

HOW ARE THEY GIVEN?
Gifts are not given at random. Every man gets what suits him (1 Cor. 7:7). The administrator does not need the gift of preaching even though it is God who will finally decide what gifts to give and to whom.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE GIFTS?
We are to use any gifts given us (1 Tim. 4:14). Some people hide their gifts because they consider them inferior to those of other people. This can be very dangerous as the parable of talents show. Not only are we to use the gifts, we are also to improve on them (11 Tim. 1:6). The gifts need constant usage to be advantageous in the Kingdom of God.
Have you any gifts? Have you been using them? Are they lost and you want to regain them? Or you want more? Why not talk to God about it.
