THE TRINITY

MEMORY VERSE: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matt. 28:19.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 3:5-17

INTRODUCATION: The Bible teaches that there is one God- the Creator of Heaven and Earth (Dan. 6:4). But a careful study of the scriptures will show that God exists in three Persons that is a Godhead manifested in three Persons. But how can God be three Persons and one God at the same time? Would that not make three Gods? (Isa. 55:8-9) teaches us that we should not use human reason when studying or trying to understand God. However, as we prayerfully go into this very important study, God will reveal Himself to us.

WHAT IS THE BASIS OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY?
Although the word Trinity cannot be found in the Bible, yet we see many instances in the scriptures when the “Triune God” manifested himself. For example, during the baptism of Jesus Christ in (Matt. 3:13-17), we see that Trinity at work: God the Son was being baptized (v.16), god the Holy Spirit descended like a Dove and alighted on the Saviour (v.16) and then God the Father spoke from heaven (v.17). Also is the baptismal formula given us by Jesus Christ in (Matt.28:19), we are to baptize “in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.” Also the benediction recorded in (11 Cor. 13:14) involves, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost.” In (Gen. 1:26) when man was to be created, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after OUR likeness…” The use of the plural terms here is quite revealing!

HOW CAN WE ILLUSTRATE THE TRINITY?
We must emphasize that the Trinity is a mystery and no single illustration can possibly explain the Trinity fully. However, if you consider me, your teacher, as a teacher who is married with children, then I am only man but I can be revealed as three persons as follows:
My mother sees me as a son. She sees me differently from anyone else and I respond to her in a way that is different from my response to others. My children see me as a father with all the implication of fatherhood. And you, my class, see me as a teacher which is different from being a son or a father. I remain one indivisible man but I am revealed as a father, son and teacher at the same time. God is one individual God but He is revealed in three separate Persons.

ARE THERE INSTANCES WHEN THE TRINITY ACTED IN UNITY?
Yes, there are many instances when the Trinity acted in unity thus confirming the doctrine of one God in three Persons. For example, in creation, God the Father spoke (Gen. 1:3), God the Son was the Word spoken (Jn. 1:1) and God the Holy Spirit moved upon the face of the waters (Gen. 1:2). In the incarnation, God the Father gave his only Son (Jn. 3:16), God the Son was born into the world (Lk. 2:11) and God the Holy Spirit came upon Mary to cause conception (Lk. 1:35). In prayer, God the Father is the one who receives (Jn. 16:23). God the Son is the one in whose Name we pray and God the Holy Spirit directs us our requests (Rom. 8:26). In regeneration, God the Father records the new name in glory (Lk. 10:20). God the Son cleanses the sin in His precious blood (Eph. 1; 7 and God the Holy Spirit performs the transforming miracle of the new birth (Jn. 3:3-6).

CONCLUSION?
Because God is a Spirit and we are physical, it is hard for us to Comprehend God. God is infinite and eternal and since it pleases the Almighty to reveal Himself to us in three Persons, let us thank each member of the Trinity, the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost for what they are and what they have done for us. Moreover, when we move into glory, it is God the Father who will receive us into the Kingdom, God the Son is the One who will change our vile body to one like His, (Phil.
3:21) and God the Holy Spirit who gives the invitation (Rev. 22:17), Are you ready to accept the invitation now?
